Give yourself permission to rest

"I feel overly exhausted."

"I just need some rest."

"I will use the next few weeks to recharge."

Sounds familiar?

I heard these words too many times in the past weeks. There were multiple conversations when either the people who reached out to me to I decided to step back from or postpone a potential coaching, because the best that could serve the person was resting.

Pushing harder is not always a solution

Before engaging in a coaching partnership, one of the best things that you can do is preparing yourself mentally, physically and emotionally. If you’re feeling burned out, exhausted, numb or it feels difficult to envision an exciting goal, give yourself permission to take a step back and rest instead.

It takes courage to say yes to rest and play in a culture where exhaustion is seen as a status symbol.” - Brene Brown

Go on a vacation, stay at home for a weekend, sleep or watch Netflix without feeling guilty, go on a weekend trip with your friends, book a trip for your family and enjoy a staycation at home, or organize a retreat for yourself.

Permissions vs. shoulds

I'm a fan of permissions, it remained from the time when I was obsessed with mindful eating. In #mindfuleating we work with permissions instead of what you are allowed or not allowed to eat.

Shoulds and shouldn'ts create resistance in the mind.

Permissions feel like an opportunity. An invitation.

In coaching I often invite my clients to do this or that.

Permission is a concept borrowed by Brene Brown: you give yourself permission to do (or not to do) certain things, instead of adding it to your to-do list. Using this example, you can give yourself permission to rest.

Give yourself permission to rest

Ever felt that resting is just another thing on your to-do list?

When your life packed with activities, even planning a holiday can feel overwhelming. There are enough expectations that we create for ourselves.

Give yourself permission to rest.

So I'm leaving this sticky note here, feel free to take it if you could use one. 😌
