January has just started and already feeling tired? On the top you feel guilty about why you aren't recharged and ready to crush the new year?
The holidays can be filled with social interactions and family time for many. As much as it's fulfiling, it also uses your social batteries. It's not just introverts (hello there!) who have the need for solitude.
Low energy was a common coaching theme this first week of Jan and popped up in ways like my clients haven't had a clear goal yet, they admittedly wanted to have a second holiday to recharge after the first one, and canceled sessions because of changed plans or sickness.
Rest psychology explores how rest, like a good night's sleep, taking a break, or enjoying the joys of life can add to you feeling fulfiled, emotional regulation and healthy mind functions aka. thinking clearly.
There are 7 types of rest and each of them has their own rest tank. Your social tank might be on 10/10 after the holidays, while the emotional tank can be lower. "If you think you're enlightened, spend a week with your family." it is a work, too.
The 7 types of rest are:
1. Social
2. Creative
3. Sensory
4. Spiritual
5. Emotional
6. Mental
7. Physical
Scheduling and planning rest is just as essential as adding a meeting in your calendar. Rest is one of the four steps 'Be better at stress' program that I teach. The other three are: Be aware, Reach and Cope.
How to plan rest? When will you be in the 'Rest & Refresh' mode?
Instead of saying, I'll stop working and have rest in the evening, plan exactly what you're going to do and when. Are you going to do a yoga class, enjoy a sound bath, visit a spiritual sangha, switch off screens, step away from an emotionally draining situation, spend time with yourself or go to the gym?
+ 1. Cellular or systemic rest is the rest of your whole body system. Heavy food, caffeine, sugar or simply too much consumption gives extra work to your body to digest. Besides easing on what you eat, the how matters, too. Mindful eating says that slowing down your eating, bringing awareness in your mealtime, and cultivating gratitude toward the food and the beings who have been involved in it has wholesome positive effects on your mind-body.
Rest is an essential part of your peak performance.
Which rest tank will you fill next?
